When do you use a center bar?
From 60 cm upwards, our 3D stretcher bars have a slot in which a center bar fits puzzle-like. Choose a center bar for rectangular/elongated canvases where the longest side > 120 cm.

When do you use a cross bar?
A cross (2 center bars with a notch that interlock in the middle) is used for (almost) square canvases where height and width > 120 cm. The cross distributes tension evenly and prevents sagging. For frames > 2 meters we recommend a double cross.
Stretcher frame with cross bar: maximum rigidity for large (almost) square formats.
Sustainable & dimensionally stable
All stretcher bars from schilderijlijsten.com are made from first-class spruce wood. By finger-jointing and then triple laminating, the stretcher frame remains stable and dimensionally accurate. The wood is 100% PEFC-certified (CU-PEFC-807830) and sourced from sustainably managed forests.
Ordering advice
The Museum 45×44 mm 3D stretcher bars are sold per piece. For one frame, always order 2 pieces of length A + 2 pieces of length B. Add a center bar or a cross where needed.
- Example 100 × 200 cm (rectangular): 2 × 100 cm + 2 × 200 cm + center bar 140 cm.
- Example 160 × 160 cm (almost square): 4 × 160 cm + cross 160 × 160 cm (2 notched center bars).
- Canvas allowance: keep at least +6 cm per side relative to the stretcher size.
Frequently asked questions
What does “with or without slot” mean?
“With slot” means there is a groove/opening in the stretcher bar. You slide a center bar into it for rectangular canvases, or two notched center bars that form a cross for (almost) square canvases. The joint works like a puzzle – quick, solid and without glue.
Can I assemble the stretcher frame myself?
Yes. Thanks to the 9 mm tenon joint you can square the corners easily. Use a rubber mallet to tighten everything. No glue or nails required. The included wedges are used to re-tension the canvas later.
When do I choose a center bar and when a cross?
Center bar: rectangular/elongated canvas with the longest side > 120 cm.
Cross: (almost) square canvas with both sides > 120 cm.
Will this fit my existing stretcher bars?
Always use bars from the same series and profile (Museum 45×44 mm) for a perfect fit. Do not combine with other profiles.
Which canvases are suitable?
Canvas, linen and cotton. The 10 mm high lip ensures maximum distance between canvas and bar, so no imprint is visible on the front.
What wood are the bars made of?
First-class spruce, triple laminated against warping and twisting, 100% PEFC-certified (CU-PEFC-807830). Made in the Netherlands.
