What is a stretcher frame?

A stretcher frame is the wooden construction you stretch a canvas onto. It consists of four stretcher bars and forms the base for every canvas painting.

Tip: finish your work with a picture frame or float frame for a professional look.

Which size do I need?

  • 45 mm stretcher bars: suitable for canvases up to 100 cm
  • 65 mm stretcher bars: from 100 cm and for heavier or thicker canvases
  • Centre or cross bars: extra reinforcement for large formats
  • Over 2 metres: always a double cross or multiple centre bars

Note: 45 mm and 65 mm stretcher bars are not interchangeable.

Standard or custom?

  • Standard sizes: in stock – in 5 cm steps (e.g., 30, 40, 50, … 200 cm)
  • Non-standard/custom sizes: made to measure per centimetre (e.g., 53, 61, 78 cm). Cross and centre bars are included. Lead time is shown per product.

Why a raised edge?

The rounded/raised edge of the stretcher bar prevents contact between canvas and wood, so wood acids don’t affect the fabric.

What are wedges?

With the supplied wedges you can retension your canvas later. Place them in the corners of the stretcher frame and tap them gently with a small hammer.
